October 7th, 2011 → 1:10 pm @

So many museums, so little time. So in order to be able to feel as if you have at least skimmed the surface of Paris’ many museums on your holiday there, here is a small list that you can pick and choose from.

Yes, everyone should see the Louvre. But it takes a great deal of time to explore all its different exhibits. Instead, visit just one. The private rooms of Napoleon III are housed in the main section in the Richelieu Wing of the Louvre and you can easily stroll through and enjoy them within a couple of hours. They are magnificent, many in deep reds and golds. When you reach the dining room stop and take a look a the sheer size of the chandeliers! Everything in the suite of rooms is the best of its time. And the biggest!

Housed in a beautiful mansion in the heart of Paris, the Musee Rodin showcases not only the sculptures of Auguste Rodin, but also showcases the interior of an amazing residence. Take time to enjoy the display inside, including stopping to view The Kiss and The Thinker, then take a stroll around the gardens. You will be enjoying a peaceful oasis in a stunning setting.

An unusual museum well off the beaten track is the small Musee Baccarat, located in a beautiful mansion and filled with historic Baccarat crystal pieces. Take a look at the “crystal room” which has been decorated by Phillippe Starck in an interesting way. This small museum is very French in every way, so it is a fun stop on your tour!

Another delightful mansion houses the Carnavalet Museum of the history of Paris. From furniture to store signs to paintings to coins, the Carnavalet is one of Paris’ best museums.

The Gobelins Manufactory is an amazing museum that also gets forgotten in the rush to see the big ones. It is where Gobelins tapestries and rugs have been made ince 1697. It only gives guided tours, and they are available on three days every week to take you through the factory that is still producing world class tapestries and rugs.

Contemporary art lovers should not miss a walk through the Centre Popidou. It is even interesting to look at as you approach it from the street. Take a tour through the exhibits inside and as you rise in the building going up floor by floor you will want to take out your camera because by the time you reach the top you will have had some amazing views over the city of Paris.
